Grammar, composition, and reading at a basic intermediate level of Chinese. Practice speaking and understanding Mandarin. Understanding of Chinese culture. Not open to native speakers of Mandarin.
The first third of the beginner's course in Mandarin for students who speak another dialect of Chinese. Emphasis on pronunciation and fundamental vocabulary, using Pinyin. Designed for students who wish to acquire basic skills of spoken Mandarin rather than formal grammar and literature.
Beginner's course in Cantonese. Extensive oral training in Cantonese. Emphasis on practical vocabulary and idiom rather than on formal grammar and literature. Students will learn tone and markings rather than Chinese characters.

Designed for students who wish to continue acquiring more advanced skills of the standard spoken language with a minimum of formal grammar. Students should have command of tone and markings, rather than Chinese characters.
Intensive training in written and spoken Mandarin with emphasis on reading, speaking, and composition. Increased linguistic ability in both English and Chinese are used as a basis for increasing vocabulary and enhancing reading and writing skills through short stories, poems, essays and compositions. Pre-advanced training in written and spoken Mandarin.
Second semester course in Mandarin grammar, composition, and reading. Practice in speaking and understanding Mandarin Chinese language and culture.
